    1. Having loved another book by John Higgs (aka J.M.R. Higgs) 'The KLF: Chaos, Magic and the Band Who Burned a Million Pounds', and having enjoyed 'Stranger than we can Imagine: Making Sense of the Twentieth Century', I was keen to read more, and so I came to this, one of his fictional books. 'The First Church on the Moon' is a funny, inventive, clever and entertaining slice of Douglas Adams-esque science fiction which, as with all great sci-fi, has some prescient things to say about the world toda [...]

    2. AKA John Higgs, author of that mind-blowing KLF book; his fiction and non-fiction may come out under slightly different aliases, but he's well aware the boundaries are porous, and this hungover romp around the Steve Moore Moonbase is at once recognisable as the work of the same inspired eccentric. One could object that the world depicted is more a melange of thought experiments, satirical stabs and plain silliness than a coherent future, but Hell, that's just as true of 2015 as it is of 2171. Be [...]

    3. This is quite sweet. It desperately wants to be by Douglas Adams but doesn't quite manage it. Made me smile in places, though.

    5. Short, sweet and very deep. Has the same simple beauty and humour of Higgs' 'Brandy of the Damned', though this one is even sillier. However, the jokes carry some serious themes: life, love, loss, death. Higgs is particularly great at catching the sense of cosmic oneness and wonder between and beneath things and he's worth reading if you ever need a reminder.

    6. Everyone should read Higgs' novellas - short, fun and deep enough for multiple readings. I've just finished this and immediately heading back to Brandy of the Damned. Fantastic stuff.

    7. as a great admirer of john higgs' brilliant non-fiction, i thought it was high time for trying his fiction. plumped for this over 'the brandy of the damned', and although i'm led to believe there are elements of a follow on from there. no matter, and until i read the latter, i think no need! 25% through this i already had several outbursts of loud out laughing and one near hysterical episode, such is the ridiculous concept of manning the first moonbase with a host of individuals blessed with 'th [...]
